Serengeti National Park Overview

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequaled for its natural beauty and scientific value, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The Serengeti National Park was established nearly a hundred years ago as a colonial game reserve, made a National Park in 1951, and later endorsed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. One of the last remaining areas of untouched wilderness, it lies securely in the Serengeti ecosystem, an area that stretches from the woodlands, lakes, and grassy plains of Ndutu in southern Serengeti. The Serengeti is located in the north of the country and shares its northern boundary with the Kenyan Masai Mara Game Reserve and its southern boundary with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Serengeti is a must-see for anyone wanting to go on safari as the park is together with the Maasai Mara in Kenya the only conservation area in Africa where you can see the annual migration of a hundred thousand zebras and over a million gnus. In addition to being home to over three million animals, the park also boasts of different landscapes. The Serengeti is the most renowned wildlife park in the entire world. Over 10,000 sq miles of pristine wilderness play host to the Great Migration and boast the highest density of large predators, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, in the world! Grass plains, woodlands, hills, and rivers abound. The variety and abundance of wildlife here are unmatched anywhere else in Africa. The Maasai translation of ‘Serengeti’ is ‘Siringet’ which means ‘a vast land that runs forever, where endless plains meet the sky.’ Easily one of Africa’s most famous national parks, the Serengeti holds the highest concentration of mammals on earth. The stunning park, with its endless savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, and rocky kopjes can be visited independently on a fly-in safari or as a feature in a northern circuit safari. To take in all the Serengeti has to offer spending around 3 to 4 nights here is recommended. We always like to place a visit to the park at the end of an itinerary, this way your holiday ends on a high.
