6 Days Marangu Route

Full Itinerary

Overview

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established trekking path on Mount Kilimanjaro. This route is a favorite among trekkers, primarily because it is the only path on the mountain that offers hut accommodation, providing a more comfortable experience. The route is known for its gradual ascent and stunning scenery, making it a popular choice for those looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience. Below is a detailed itinerary for a 5-night/6-day climb via the Marangu Route. If you prefer a shorter trek, you can opt to skip the acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, continuing directly to Kibo Hut in one day. This trek via the Marangu Route offers an unforgettable adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro, combining natural beauty, physical challenge, and the chance to stand on the highest point in Africa. Whether you choose the 5-day or 6-day option, this route provides a classic Kilimanjaro experience.

Day 1: Hotel to Mandara Hut

The adventure begins with a drive from your hotel to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, a journey that takes about an hour. After registering at the park, you’ll start your trek through the lush rainforest. The trail is rich with diverse flora and fauna, including towering Eucalyptus trees, vibrant birdlife, and the striking Colobus monkeys. A side trip to Maundi Crater offers a chance to take in sweeping views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya. After 3-4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mandara Hut, your first stop on the mountain.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail ascends into the open moorlands, offering spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit of Kibo. The landscape changes dramatically as you enter the heathland zone, where you’ll find giant lobelias and groundsels dotting the terrain. The higher altitude may start to make its presence felt, but the stunning vistas provide ample motivation to keep going. After 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

You can opt for a short hike toward Mawenzi Peak, which will further help your body adjust to the altitude. The rest day at Horombo Hut allows you to relax and take in the breathtaking surroundings, ensuring you’re well-rested for the challenging days ahead.

The vegetation becomes sparse as you ascend into the alpine desert, and the air becomes thinner. The day’s journey, which takes about 5-6 hours, ends at Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest, have dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit (Uhuru Peak) to Horombo Hut

The summit day begins early, with the ascent starting around midnight. The climb to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim is steep and challenging, with loose scree underfoot and temperatures dropping significantly. However, the reward is worth it as you witness the sunrise from the roof of Africa. From Gilman’s Point, you continue on to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos at the summit, you begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut, stopping at Kibo Hut for lunch and a short rest. The descent is tough on the legs, but the sense of accomplishment keeps you going.

The descent is generally easier, but can be wet and muddy, especially at lower elevations, so trekking poles and gaiters are recommended.
